The 10 DO’s and DON’TS of Twitter – Hash tags and the downside of Jim Jones

3. DO… use hash tags (#word) to put recurring topics and ideas into an easily searchable group. Do you have a favourite restaurant you love to go to and like to Twitter about it every time you do? Add #mcdonalds or whatever the restaurant is called in the tweet. Later on you can if you want to find all your tweets about that topic and see if anyone else was talking about it you can just doa search in a Twitter app or on the site for #mcdonalds (or whatever the restaurant is called) and there they all are. If you see one of your followers has done that in their tweet and you want to talk about it too, add the hash. That helps them see who is talking about the topic and what’s being said.
DON’T… worry if you have less friends than Kevin Rose or Bryan Brinkman. There is this weird mentality to try and get as many followers as possible by doing stupid shit. Don’t fall for it. If you have 10 users or 10,000 odds are only a few people are really reading everything you tweet. That’s fine. I hate the fake contest. If you make me the number 1 followed person I’ll give away the moon to one of my followers. Then when they only become #4 it’s no moon for anyone. Just write what you want and be happy with what you have. Don’t douchebag it up people.
