WEBSITES

What makes up this category are some cool ideas, mixed with other repositories, combined with TONS of weirdness. I have been using the web regularly since 1992. I have seen almost every incarnation of website come and go. In that time these sites of mine change. This is what it is as of February 2009.

  1. Gorilla Mask

This is probably my most common daily “go to” site. This is just one of those great repositories of random Internet awesomeness. It has links to videos, games, websites, craigslist ads, porn and anything else you might possibly find on the Internet that explains why the Internet even exists. We all go through that grown up usage where we read news and get stock updates and do stuff that is respectable. However, we would much rather find a video of a polar bear shitting and send that on to everyone of our friends. Gorilla Mask is where you’re going to find that. There are a huge number of these types of sites (Fark, Something Awful, Phun) but this is mine. It has great archive and certain cool items broken out into their own category pages. This is days of fun.

  2. Post Secret

Post Secret is a really cool project started by Frank Warren. it’s what is often referred to as a community art project on the web. Basically, the idea is this. People mail (via snail mail) Frank homemade postcards admitting some kind of secret about their life. That’s it. These secrets range from the mundane (Being clumsy will never stop me.) to the hilarious, (I like the inside of microwave popcorn bags.) to the scary and tragic (My mom puts a star on the calendar for everyday I haven’t cut myself. I don’t deserve 5 of those stars…) Add to that, some of the gorgeous and hilarious postcard art that people create and this is an incredible read. The site is updated with new secrets every Sunday. Also, there are 4 Post Secret books that you can buy which are absolutely compelling.

  3. 4chan

If Post Secret is the heart of the Internet, 4chan is the scabby anus. If you are easily offended or even moderately offended STAY THE FUCK AWAY! If not? You are in for a hell of a ride. 4chan is a bulletin board system that poeple use mostly to put up pics and links. It was started as a community forum for North Americans with a penchant for Japanese culture. What it is now is a violent, abuse-laden rant area for anyone who wants to pick on the weak and helpless totally anonymously and without any sense of fair play. In other words, it’s fucking awesome. Any popular Internet meme you can think of, most likely gained initial popularity here. The posters on this site refer to themselves as the collective Anonymous and take pleasure on fucking with the unprepared. Their way that they brought to the steps of Scientology last year, has made them a viable, affecting community. To see 4chan at it’s absolute best (ie worst) browse through the posts of the section “random” better known as /b.

  4. Kongregate

Now if you know me IRL or have followed the initial posts I’ve put up here, you’ll know that I am a proud video game addict. However, one of my greatest game loves is online Flash games. Probably because I also build them as part of my day job. There are thousands of Flash game sites out there but Kongregate is probably my favorite and I am here playing all the time. It has a great look, an amazing repository of games for many sources, a really strong community support and all of the best Flash games on the net. If you like playing games, you’ll be lost here for days. Their achievements or points system to boost playership is excellent. It also has weekly and monthly cash money contests for game designers themselves. Awesome! Plus, their game they designed Kongai, a collectible card fighting game, is woven right into the game library making it one of the deepest, richest web games there is.

  5. FetLife

Now everyone and their dog has tried building a social networking tool for a specific community. Most have quickly surrendered and resorted to creating a group in Facebook. Fetlife is a great example of what is capable when you have a strong community, a topic that might not best be served on Facebook and someone behind it who is determined to make this thing great. Created my Montreal’s own John Baku, Fetlife is becoming the social networking platform for the kink community. This is not a place where you’re going to go just for porn. Though there is lots there. It is a great resource for anyone who is involved in, our is curious about the kink community. Strong networking aspects, great organizational tools and tons of awesome people make this the place you are going to go and just get lost in the weirdness. You will see, read and take part in stuff that you would not find anywhere else. This ain’t your father’s Facebook.
